Most of the rocks I polish I have found in streams, rivers, driveways hiking trails, landscaping and the like. There's nothing "spectacular" native to Illinois my home state. So for me it's kind of a two fold thing.....(1) the challenge of finding something "tumble worthy" & (2) the satisfaction I get when a common rock becomes a beautiful shiny "gem". How's about you all ? ....... Ken

Well, lets see ... There's the prospecting ... And the mining ... And the pressure washing ... And the slabbing ... And the grinding, sanding & cutting, of course! But my favorite part is seeing the cool creations that other geoenthusiasts make from the rock we send them! ;D And the great folks we share our field trips with! Of course, there are all of the folks here at RTH! Cheers, all! Kris

Of all aspects of this rewarding hobby, it's the people. I have met so many wonderful people I would not have known otherwise. Rock folk are some of the nicest warmest most generous people around.
I do enjoy using creativity and skills you can't learn in a classroom to turn a rock you find on the ground into a beautiful work of art. But what good is any of that if you don't have anyone with your same enthusiasm to share it with? If you didn't have rock buddies you would just be a weirdo who can't stop picking up rocks and hides in the garage all the time sawing and grinding them.
One rock trip with buddies will do it. I think the burro creek trip was my favorite. I wish I could have gone on one of the WWR trips. Steve

That and the other favorite part is finding that one rock. I'm talking about THE find. We've all got one. You're out houndin and you find it right there. Probably got a story if how it was found too.

Oh and if you haven't found it, you will.
Geoff, much like your post with your daughter grinding rocks, that just warms my heart. I hope that when my daughter gets old enough I will get to experience your favorite part too. Steve

The part I like most is hounding -- finding treasures.
Then I like the creativity of the "making things" part.

Finding them. Meeting lots of great folks. Swapping, or just giving away rocks. Enjoying the great outdoors in search of rocks. Cutting them. Shaping and polishing them. I enjoy every aspect of this great hobby.
Most of all, I love introducing kids to rocks and minerals. I love the look of wonder in their eyes when you show them the outside of a plain looking old rock, then turn it over and show them the cut and polished side.

hunting and finding and then when you cut open one and see what is inside it's exciting, and polishing and seeing the beauty of them. wrapping it and giving it away the joy of the peoples face when they get it. pretty much all of it I guess.

I agree with all the above & I suppose hounding is the best part of the trip unfortunately its not my strong point but my favorite part of working the stones is watching the shaping/ shining ~ colors/shades emerge especially around the 400 grit phase on a belt when the reflection of the rock, under the water, beams back at ya O yeah! It's a learning experience. I think we're all a lot like rocks. Such potential, but the tumbling process is long and tedious before it produces brilliant pieces.

My favorite part is anything new and exciting...new rocks from others either purchased or otherwise and finding my own can be equally fun..although finding them lasts a lot longer
working with new and better material is a high

Hmmm, that's a hard question. I think I like everything about it, and dislike nothing about it. It's good for the mental and the physical.

I agree with Charlie. It's really neat seeing a new discovery someone has made especially if it's a new agate or jasper type. Also I agree the biggest rushes are when you yourself find a really cool specimen or cut into a rock and find real beauty inside. No rush like finding an unexpected treasure to add to your collection!....Mel

Man that's a tough one, hounding for sure, slabbing for sure, finding that one that makes your heart skip a beat, trying to walk and my Lab dropping a stick in front of me to throw, go 2 steps and she drops it there again etc. till I pick it up and throw it for her, when I'm hounding. The grinding polishing, and loosing track of time, wrapping ,and coming up with a new idea to share, and being able to share with you artists, cause you are all a little weird like me! ;D
