Go here: tomaszewski.net/Kreigh/Minerals/Homemade.shtmlIt covers homemade sphere makers, how to drill holes in stones, rock tumbler. open top rock tumbler, rock saw, horizontal laps, pressure sprayer, metal working (not much), faceting machine and others. Other sources are mentioned, and he includes sketches. Hope this is helpful. Came to me from yahoo lapidary.

Alternative pan for a homemade vibro lap Thinking about making a vibro lap and one of my queries is will any steel pan do eg: a 60cm frying pan, pizza or paella pan be suitable. I know that for polishing a smooth pan with felt can be used. I am more interested in the grinding stages would any adjustments have to be made to the smooth pan. Another insert perhaps. Has anyone tried this or similar? Regards Andy

Every vibrating lap I've seen has a grooved pan for grinding. Thanks grooved carry the grit and slurry. You could polish with a flat pan and a piece of carpet, but I don't think a flat pan would work, otherwise.

I believe either Lortone or Covington used flat (smooth) pans. Reckon the grit get between the pan and the rock and it works or they wouldn't sell many.
My Raytech Hustlers and 27" Highland Park vibe laps all have the grooved pans, so I can't comment on the difference between how flat and grooved work.

I got rid of it and got a reciprolap is is the absolute best for rough grinding the flats. Both grooved and ungrooved worked about the same. Once I got the reciprolap I did only polishing in the Lortone. All rough grinding in the reciprolap. A cast Iron Skillet should work fine as a grinding pan. even the ones like Lodge which have the sand texture from the mold would grind flat against the rock. so it would not matter if it started rough.

Just finished up the diy polish station, mounted 6x1 felt disk and using optical grade cerium oxide
