Howdy folks, Well, fall has come and it's time to harvest my favorite treat, south Texas pecans. Last year we had drought so no crop at all so my mouth has been watering and I've had my eyes out for good trees. While out horseback riding, I make note of all the best trees ( thin shells) and then the race begins to beat the wild hogs to the nuts. Trick is to get them when the hulls split and the nuts just start to drop as the hogs love these nuts and will clean up all those on the ground every night. We've just had a period of rain and the nuts are mature and we have more big trees loaded than I've ever seen, so for the next few weeks they will really start to pop and I'll be a busy boy. I carry out my pack when ever I hike now and try to bring back a pack full every time I go out. Only hazard is fire ants love these nuts too and build a lot of nests under the trees . I stepped on one and got stung up good yesterday but it was worth it to get the nuts. Here's a pic of the bounty from my first two hikes, about 40 pounds...Mel

Gillespie County just north of the Kerr County border. I've heard Corpus has pretty miserable weather but have not been there yet. We are much less humid and a bit cooler here on the Edwards Plateau and not in the path of so many storms either....Mel

cool! Pine nuts are on out here, but I have little desire to harvest the little sticky bastards.

Grew up in Georgia and LOVED the big pecans every fall. Nothing like that here - enjoy!

its: *L* Trees are a bit big for nets. Could have used one yesterday though. Wind was blowing hard and I had to give up picking because the dang nuts kept hitting me in the head. Very annoying!......Mel
