this has the feel and look to it of obsidian...same sheen..same feel..same everything...but i havent seen anything like it on here before. 1 of the guys that works for us said that he had a ton of trilobites he collected in s.w.virginia...and he brought a fruit cake can full of them for my son and in the can was this peice...i forgot about the trilobites when i seen it...he said while digging for trilobites that he would run across veins of this stuff...and better yet... only he knows his spot on his familys property. he said he would gladly take us 1 weekend...even though he hasnt been there in 8 or 9 years...he said he didnt care about the blue peices...just the trilobites....i throwed a razor blade to it..i can see a line on it...but cant feel it with a fingernail...i also cant rub the line off...so it did something to the peice....any thoughts on it? color is mostly true..and it has lighter blue banding or swirls...of course pics suck ;D...clickable. ![](http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c386/fittycents/th_blue5-1.jpg) ![](http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c386/fittycents/th_blue4-1.jpg) ![](http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c386/fittycents/th_blue3-1.jpg) ![](http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c386/fittycents/th_blue2-1.jpg)

Sure looks like Lapis. The focus is just enough to not really see detail. Sounds like Lapis.

it doesn't look like any of the lapis I have seen over here, all the rough lapis here is a flat blue even when wet.

Furnace glass kind of makes sense since you said it looks and it's cleavage (i'm assuming) is like Obsidian....

I say Kyanite. Did you say it is kinda of glassy? I have heard of that mineral coming from Vrigina.

Dosen't Kyanite occur in long layered shards?

Yes, that is the most commom and desired form of Kyanite. But like any mineral or crystal, theres allot of ways the growth can be inhibited to be small. BUt this piece could also just be a broken piece from the larger growth.

well i got about as much as i could out of this guy...he says he doesnt know anything about rocks or furnace glass...when i told him what others thought it might be..(glass)..hell he started asking me questions like...why would someone walk 1/2 mile up a mountain to dump glass...why would they go to the middle of nowhere to dump it...stuff like that...then he started rambling about different layers of the earths crust..smelling the ground..irridium layers..asteroids...ufos. where doc has florida rednecks ..i think i got myself a mountain redneck thats been abducted or something ;D..but he did say he would give it to me....and bring a couple of hunks of what he says is quartz that he found along with it....ill get the neighbor to take detailed photos of it and the so called quartz...here is a few of the fossils he gave us...clickable. ![](http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c386/fittycents/th_tri2.jpg) ![](http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c386/fittycents/th_trilobite2.jpg) ![](http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c386/fittycents/th_tri10-1.jpg)

Definitely not kyanite or lapis. Some kind of slag is what I would think. People often get confused on exactly where things were found. Slag can also turn up in some weird places.
Some form of opal might be another possibility. Why don't you take it to a local rockshop?

The trilobites, 2nd pic, looks real good. Some trilobites are found on this side of the state up near Cave Springs, GA. As far as the blue stuff, I don't know. I sort of think it may be slag. Slag has shown up over here was back on Forrest Service roads in the National Forest areas. There was alot of iron mines and a few furnaces up near Cedartown and west into Alabama. Take Care!
