I know this is an old thread but it is nice to see the spaces other people work in. Clean & Organized !
Nice space

There is another thread with a similar focus. I'll try to find a link.

I'm working in my garage right now (I'm on a pizza break!) to make room for a cabinet and counter top with a sink for my new cab machine. Once I get some things set up I'll post pics of the embarassment of my current area. It's a wonder I can turn out anything where I've been working!

I started working in the corner of my garage to make a dedicated lapidary spot. This first picture was taken Saturday morning as I began. Believe it or not, we had already done a lot of cleaning up a couple of weeks ago. Here it is today. Not bad for one day's work! Especially since I also did some cleanup at my shop today. Some of the stuff from my garage needed to be transported to my shop and I had to put it away properly I still have a lot of work to do but it's obviously a huge improvement. The wall on the right of the cabinet is the water heater closet. There is hot and cold water right in that wall so it's going to be easy access for the sink. I'm going to run a drain out through the water heater closet into settling buckets and then drain it in the yard. This cabinet was installed in my shop until this morning. Got it out. It up and got it installed. Obviously I still have to do the sink. I have a large commercial kitchen pull down faucet to install. Should be a good combination for washing out tumblers. Here are before and after pictures of my sink. Not perfect but it came out a lot better than I thought it would.

Wow, that is a really great space! Really handy too that you had the old cabinet and countertop already that fits the space perfectly. And that old sink will be super nice to have.👍👍🤓 I see your new KN Cabber is already settled in. Looks like a great workspace!! Looking forward to seeing your upcoming cabs.

Congrats on the new KN - you'll like it ! Lucky you, that you have another building to put all the other stuff in.
Tip on the KN -
I found that drainage of the unit is less than ideal, and finally solved the issue by drilling holes in the table top for the out hoses.
Something you might consider, it worked a LOT better.

The space is coming along. It's just going to get better, plus a lot of stuff will move out from my other room and give me a lot better space and storage for wire wrapping and other various projects. I still have to do plumbing. I think I'm going to cover the unfinished wall with marlite and put some overhead cabinets in. Once I have my cabinets figured out I can add some more overhead lighting, although this is more light then I've ever had in an indoor work space. liveoak, Patty I've actually got rid of most of the stuff. I've sold a lot and keep filling my dumpster. I moved a bunch of aquarium stuff to my shop and will have a sale coming up. I've been purging and cleaning my shop at the same time. Everything I took down is in labeled plastic bins on shelves awaiting sales. Aquariums are tuff to sell but I have some high end lights and nitrogen regulators that are pretty easy to turn over. Thanks for the drainage tips. I had picked up on some of that as this is my second temporary set up for it. I just brought home some very dense 1" thick rubber mats. These are the ones they use on the floors in cattle and horse stalls so they're really tough. I'm going to cut a full mat for the machine and then a strip for the front to give it a little more tilt. I will be drilling the cabinet top so I may be able to do away with the front strip. I'll probably use copper elbows right off the outlets, down through the counter and then into my sink drain and settling traps that will plumb to the outside into a gravel filled hole.

I like the copper elbow idea- heck, maybe you can just braze it in ?? Or at least gasket it somehow. The point is to drain it straight through the counter top, one way or another. I give you credit for moving out a lot of stuff - we have plenty we need to move along as well ! But we did recently sell a boat - and that's as hard as selling aquarium stuff !

A couple of improvements. Today. I made a stainless steel rest for my cab machine. I also put rubber underneath it with an extra pad under the front to raise it up a little bit. It does drain a lot better now even with the hoses laying on the countertop. Also, I remembered I had a portable AC unit at the shop that I don't want to loan out to customers because it leaked on somebody's hardwood floor! I don't care if it leaks a little on my garage floor. It's quite pleasant in here now.

rockbrain I saw this late last night and was too tired to comment. I really like your matching stainless steel cab rest. I’ve been brainstorming something similar. It looks like you are using it to grind your edge shape perpendicular to the wheels? I actually want to make one that is essentially a little bit of table space. My workbench is exactly the size of my machine. So I don’t have any room to lay out slabs and trace shapes and dop and whatnot. Right now I have a piece of scrap melamine shelving that I cut to lay over the tray and it actually works great. I use it all the time as a little table top. But I like your matching stainless one. Then I also like your use of it as a cab rest. I have an individual small hand supported cab rest, also homemade, and I think I have something like a 12° angle on it or so to get my cab edges tapered. But maybe one across the entire machine would be less fatigue-ing. Anyway, I like it. Is it just bent, no welding?

Yes, khara. It was the heaviest piece of stainless I had around and it seems to work fine without welding. I usually do a little less than 12 deg. With the rest I let the curve of the wheel give me my angle for the girdle. It's set so the top of my preform right is right below the center of the wheel. I've started trying to trim the preform a little farther outside the line. I lay the preform flat on the rest and grind to the line and that gives me a little angle and makes the bottom of the cab slightly larger than the top. I was laying a piece of scrap wood across before but it was a little too rough and the edges were bit too rounded to grind accurately. Plus, it had a tendency to creep and bump against the soft wheels while using it. This one doesn't seem to do that but I may make something smaller that hooks onto the side. I only need it to extend past the first two wheels. I'm also planning on making some kind of little skirt to block water being thrown forward when using the side flat disk. For now I think I'll just cut a piece of stainless and put it under the machine. I've got a couple holes in my counter top and it doesn't take much water to make the particle board swell.
