My brother from Maryland came down in May for a few weeks, and as we try to do every year, we like to go and rockhunt the Moab area for a few days. This year wasn't any different, and we enjoy the time we get to spend with each other. Here's a few shots of some of the area. The area you find YellowCat Wood in is the same area where alot of Uranium mining was done in the 40's-50's. There was lots of mining done in the area back in the day. A larger mine all grated up and sealed. (unfortunately!) The shafts have all been grated up as well. This one went down a long ways! The mines that aren't sealed up are flooded with water, and my brother refused to go swimming! What appears to be a sort of conveyor type system..probably to load the ore on the trucks. An old cabin...still surviving the elements! We drove around alot, and found some pretty good stuff. The YellowCat area has been heavily hounded. My brother's in laws hunted there in the 60's and he has some very nice pieces to show for it. Even with the map he drew for us, we came back with just a few small pieces, nothing like the larger specimens he has. Crystal Filled Petrified Wood We did find some Agate weathering out of the top of the hills. After further exploring and walking around, we found some promising looking Agate and I was excited. I wanted to keep exploring but it was very HOT! I will be back there to search more this coming weekend. I will have to add some pictures of the agates in the next few days. Leaving you with my Funny Looking Mug Shot! Hope ya'll enjoyed. Steve

That;s my favorite place to hound. We made three trips there in August and July and it is IMPOSSIBLE not to have success. You are right about not finding larger pieces of rough, though. Most of the larger pieces we found were also fractured, thus making it hard to slab. But the color is great.
Nice finds, better than what we got. Now I have even more reason to return next year.

Great report, hope to see some of the stuff you found weathering out of the top of the hills when you go back.

Those are amazing. I imagine it's easy to see the agate against the stark brown landscape. I really enjoyed the tour if the old mines.

With the price of yellow cat pet wood you've got about a grand worth of rocks there. Great pics, always fun to see your trip pics.

Tony....If that was the case...I'd be there more often. Too bad ebay is so unpredictable.
