I was surprised to see that covington's flagship grinder setup still uses the old fashioned thumper wheel with SIC belts: www.covington-engineering.com/combo_8_dia_pf.htmlHow are these to grind on? It looks like a nice machine otherwise, but I can't see getting something like this in place of a Genie or Titan setup. I guess you could throw an expando drum on there instead, but the way the machine is designed, you'd have to take it apart to change out belts. The factory configuration appears to be 100 and 220 grit hard diamond wheels, 400g belt on the thumper, 1200 grit disk plate, and then finishing with 50K diamond on a leather pad. It's an interesting setup; 400 to 1200 strikes me as a big leap. I bring this up because I was visiting a local shop that has purchased two of these units for lapidary classes they plan on having there. I wasn't quite sure what to make of these thumper wheels.

I have one of the "split thumper" drums...I don't like it. But the SiC paper rolls are cheap. Infact mine is up for grabs if anyone wants to pay for shipping.

I took a bunch to the recycler a couple years ago. I think the reason Covington uses them is because otherwise you would have to take it apart to change sandpaper. Thats why I use arbors.

I got a few of them on a machine I am hoping to refurbish. I was going to give them a shot. From what I understand, they work fine and have been in use for ages. They just make noise. I am not sure if using one would cause a stone to fly off the dop.

If the cab is not attached very securely I bet the thumpers will take them right off. I try to hold the cab as much as possible, using the stick for additional support.
