The Portland Regional Show is just a week away. For those in the NW you may know this is one of the largest shows in the area.
In addition there will be a bonus presentation well worth attending, we will be sure to check it out if we get a break. Details as I recieved in an email are below...
A Special Presentation will take place at the Portland Regional Show
in Hillsboro, Oregon. Presentation dates are October 13 & 14 at
ll:00am, 1:30pm, and 3:30pm .
Lake Superior Agates....the "Other" View
This presentation is about unusual agates! We all love beautiful
banded agates but in addition many collectors enjoy and prize the
"non-banded" varieties such as moss, tube, sagenite, and waterlevel
plus unusual combinations.
Lake Superior Agates in particular offer a wide range of "Other"
varieties of agate besides banded. The presentation illustrates
these other varieties using 75 individual agates photographed in
high definition digital. It also includes many "close up" zoom
views of the agates so that viewers can enjoy the fantastic detail
and colors present.
John Marshall is the author of "The Other Lake Superior Agates"
which was first published in 2003 with two subsequent editions.
The third edition of 2009 is the most recent. The book is presently
out of print in hard copy. However, since it was produced using
all digital format it is available as a pdf which is identical to the
printed book. Information will be available at the presentation
giving viewers the opportunity to download a copy of this 190 page
digital book as a pdf file at no cost.
John collected his first Lake Superior Agates as a boy of seven
living in Minnesota. At eight he began lapidary work and was
fortunate to have such mentors as William J. Bingham the
discoverer of Binghamite. Later in life he moved to Oregon
and enjoys working with agates and other lapidary materials
of the Pacific Northwest. However in addition, his boyhood
love of Lake Superior Agates has continued to the present day
and he makes occasional collecting trips to Minnesota.
Most recently he was a presenter at the International "Celebration of Agates"
held in Minneapolis/Saint Paul in July 2012. The presentation
he brings to the Portland Regional Gem and Mineral Show is
the same as given at the Celebration of Agates. Anyone who
loves agates will enjoy the presentation. It offers the opportunity
to learn about one of the world's most prized agates,
The Lake Superior Agate.
The presentation is approximately 25 minutes in length.
There will be a short introduction and opportunity for questions
following the presentation. The usual length of the complete
presentation is 45 minutes.
Hope to see you there.
