I found this in a creek bed here in Illinois. Its a reddish brown layer with a tan inner core. I tumbled for two weeks and tried sanding it but that did very little. I just started tumbling and polishing so I could use some help please.

a pic and some info on hardness (like what scratches it) would help

I tried 220 sand paper, wat should I use for a scratch test. I'm not really sure how to add a pic.

there are some posting pic tutorials in the members photo section.
scratch with steel nale ot know if it is harder/softer than 5 MOHS. Scratch with shard of obsidian (or broken wine bottole) to know if harder/softer than MOHS 6. Scratch with a quartz point or shard of agate to know about MOHS 7

I always get fooled by reddish color rind of a rock and inside is a white marbleish type of stone
the oxidation always surprises me thinking it go all the way through the rock
not saying that what your is..
