So I just got a Eastwood vibe tumbler, got a great deal on it too...set it up and ran it outside because I knew it would be louder than my rolling tumbler, it was really loud with the top off and the ceramic media went flying out of it .. prolly cuz I didn't have it near capacity to absorb more of the vibes.... anyways I moved it into the laundry room cause I knew it was still loud, and closed the door to keep it as quiet as I could.. you can only hear it from the kitchen now.... anyways I'm sitting at dinner and I asked a question and I get "huh?? can't hear you over all the noise from outside!!".. so I took it in stride... ha ha very funny I know its loud that's why its in the laundry room.... 15 minutes later I'm still getting my chops broke about it .. "you know there are 2 little kids here (we have company staying with us for awhile) who are afraid of loud noises", so I say "guess you need to close your mouth then!!".. but that comment flies by and my chops continue to get broken until I finally say F*CK IT!! and go out to the laundry room and turn off the tumbler. As I come back into the house my best friend looks at me and says " it's done already?? I tell him "no, at this rate it will take a week at least" he looks surprised because I have been bragging at how fast the vibe is compared to the rolling tumblers ad he's like" that long??" and I look at him and say "yeah I have to turn it off I'm getting complaints about the noise in the house" then I walk back into the house go to my office and my wife comes in... why did you turn it off?? because I'm tired of complaining/whining about the noise!!, she looks at me like I'm an idiot and I tell her " at this point, if everything doesn't dry up by morning just sitting there and ruin the rocks, I'll take it out back clean it out and box it up to put it away and there goes 75.00 down the drain....F*CK IT !!!" needless to say no one is talking or even coming near me know, I've had 4 hours of quiet!! Tomorrow I pull the tumbler out of the laundry room .. move it to the shed out back and run it during the day only shut down at night, I have no steady power out there yet, and if when they say how nice the stones look, I'll tell them they would look better but I had to shut everything at night to keep the wimps happy!!... probably start a whole new set of arguments!!
Oh joy !!
so this is my rambling moment.. thanks for listening and if you don't agree with what I say good for you, if you agree, good for you also... I don't care I just need a place to let off some steam about the whole thing!!

I know what it is like to hear the constant hounding. I played drums for 25 years and there were times I tried to work around everyone's schedule and still get shot down.....repeatedly. Even if all I was doing was mixing tracks. Wimps live over here too. I don't have a loud tumbler to for people to complain about but if I did they would certainly complain. It's like trying to do something important to you and nobody gets it or even seems to care. I eventually quit playing drums but for other reasons. Maybe you could chuck and unfinished rock at em to blow off some steam. lol Either way good luck and sorry ya havin problems.

Than Tony, I know what it is to want to play drums... I have been forbidden from learning unless I can find someplace else to play!!!
My wife, my biggest supporter, is also my biggest adversary when it comes to the complaints about the noise level of the tumbler.... but is the 1st to say well maybe you can get good enough to make a few bucks to help with the bills and pay for the rock your using.
I figure I'm probably screwed either way.... when dealing with women!!

Wifey asked me last week, "why isn't my tumbler spinning?". I was lazy and between batches. Just got it running again with some slabs fish sent me. This is going to be the best batch ever! He sent some very nice stones. Hoping to soon get a gy-roc and three tubs for faster satisfaction. Maybe I'll make a sound chamber for the noise.
Mario, I dont know your pain, but I feel your pain! !!

you could make a box out of plywood to put the tumbler in the house to cut the nose.walt

I'm working on getting full time electricity to my shed, get a mini fridge, loaf of bread, half pound ham & cheese, mustard and I don't have to stop until its time to pick up the lil one from school or go in until it's dinner time!! Then comes a hose hookup for running water, Laundry sink w/open drain so I can move all the tumblers out there and clean as needed with no drains to clog!! All that and a couple siz packs of Diet Pepsi, Coke Zero, & D. Mountain Dew and I'm good.... I drink at least 2, 64 oz water jugs a day in the heat as it is, a cold soda after that would be most welcome!!
May even add A/C to finish it all off!!
I may try the Noise Box idea too ... have some leftover ply lying around and some 2x's also... look into it tomorrow

You sound like me, a man with a plan!! I'm going to build me a work shed in the spring so I can have all my tools and rock stuff in one place. Complete with water, electric of course, and yes even some A/C. My little piece of heaven. And the mini fridge, man I didn't even think of that. Another thing to add to the list. Myself, I think it's gonna be great, my family however .... well ...... they gonna miss me!! LOL

Mario: Us females have the same 'crosses to bear'. Sometimes my husband thinks I ran away from home because I am hiding out in the basement. I deal with people all day long and sometimes I just want to be left alone. I worked very hard to get what I wanted and it is a 1300sf walk in basement with a bathroom, hot and cold running water and it's all mine. Saws, grinders, tumblers, walls of shelving, tubs and tubs of rocks and no one to screw with me...heaven! of course, I am much older than you and have 'paid my dues'. So, get that shed in order... We all need to vent sometimes.

Can't help with the family issues but boxing most tumblers causes overheated motors. Diamond Pacific's Mini Sonics with no motor would be the only exception I know of. If you put a scrap of carpet under the vibe tumbler (don't block air intake on motor) you will deaden some of the sound. A foam lined open box with air vents may absorb some sound also. An overheated motor that shuts off or dies from overheating is quiet but not the result you were looking for.

The best advice for your hobby/passion is your own seperate space for all the annoying noises they make I got me half of the 2+ car garage for my lapidary shop heated/air conditioned with a fridge no running water but that is no biggie got my tumblers, saws, grinders and flat lappers all set up and also a carving area I feel for your stress but I got to ask does your wife work plus take care of children? taking care of kids and doing all the house stuff will wear one thin in the nerves department pretty quick
