If your spouse tolerates the tumbler in the basement, never ever turn it off while s/he is around. The silence is deafening. Always change out the barrels when you are home alone...

HA HA HA, I completely agree with you. My tumbler is also in the basement which is also my kitchen, as soon as I turned it on for the first time my partner said "thats not staying in here, its so annoying" after 2 days it never got mentioned. It just sounds like the deep fat frier is on constantly. Now I'm affraid to turn it off until I'm home alone.

There's a cure for that, get a slab saw and she wont be complaining about the tumbler noise anymore. When my garage door is open I can hear my saw from 4 houses away. I have (8) barrels going in the basement too and after a year straight even I enjoy the quite when I turn it off to change the grits.
