This was a mystery piece from a box from Mary Ann. Most of it broke and then I got the brilliant idae to stabilize it a bit first. In person this has more peachy tones. I love it, but I don't know what it is. It wasn't hard like an agate, more like an average jasper, maybe softer. The pieces came apart where the color divides are. Took a real good shine. Haven't had much time to do too many stones or wraps and I've been distracted by my grand daughter's illness. She is back in the hospital with complications from the first surgery. She is in more pain and is more miserable than before. When I left this afternoon, She was getting a pic line, for nutrition this time, since she can't eat anything. It was looking better, but now looking like more surgery. She's been in a week already with no release in sight. I'm not a happy grandma. Attachments:

Thanks Randy, I should have guessed algae by the looks of it.
Thanks for the well wishes, too.

I agree with Bikerrandy on both accounts, Stromatolite and very cool!

sad news about g-daughter. make sure they give her probiotics when treatment s done. stromatolite may be correct. However there is a reddish cast that is not typical of similar stromatalites I have seen. also consider squirrely rhyolite

Yes, I was going to suggest swirl rhyolite as well. I believe Maryann had some on her site a year or so ago.

Thanks Daniel!!! Seeing the slab really brings the point home. That is EXACTLY what it looked like before I cut it. Super cool stuff and yes, it does have peachy undertones.

Tela, sorry to hear about your grand daughter again. Sending prayers your way! Hope fully, she can bounce back from this setback quickly, like most kids do.
I think it's swirly rhyolite as well. I picked up a slab from Maryann at Quartzsite in January. Nice stone, and great looking wrap! Jean

Looking at the rough that Daniel posted, it's really looking like swirly rhyolite now. That does look identical to your cab.

I'm rooting for rhyolite as well. I got a few pieces of that "weird stuff" from Mary Ann in an odds and ends box, and it *very* similar in looks and the way it works to some banded rhyolite I bought. I also got a piece of near identical stuff without the pinks. I hope all goes well for granddaughter.

Easy id for stromatolite would be an acid test. All those laminations come from the algae causing calcite to deposit - a bit like tree rings. Since strom is made up of calcite then if this rock is strom, then it should bubble with a dilute acid.

Tela, {{{HUGS}}} and lots of prayers going for your little one and your whole family! No idea what the stone is but I don't think that matters. Hang in there, Grandma!

Thanks for the tip. Cathy, I'm horrible, horrible, horrible! I should have mentioned here that our little girl got out of the hospital WITHOUT more surgery. YAY!! What they were hoping would happen, happened. It took longer than anyone thought it would but simply put-- her guts unclogged, unkinked and relaxed on their own. Docs say if it happens again, which is a distinct possibility, then they will operate. I have been so crazy busy and side tracked I haven't had time to check in here for any length of time. I'm so sorry. Thank you so much for your thoughts and prayers. Prayers certainly went a long way for her.
