At shows in Kansas City and Topeka, I have been seeing small pieces and slabs of what I thought was some type of sage agate. I learned today from Denny's Lapidary of Overland Park, KS that this is actually a dendritic stone from private land in Quinter, KS. I am going to try to find out a bit more, and I am going to see if Denny wants to sell some rough. (His prices seemed very reasonable.) I have to work a bit to find landscape scenes. It is more for the dendrite hound than for the scenic hound. But, there are no fractures and the dendrites are in the rock - not just on the surface. I am glad to have it.

Yes Ed, the Wyoming type (aka SageBrush Jasper, aka Wyoming Dendritic Dolomite, aka Dry Creek Dolomite) is what I assumed I was seeing the last few years. That is what I generically call Sage Agate. I have seen the the Wyoming material for years on ebay, and have some with nice scenes.
What was new to me was that there was a deposit (or something very similar) in the Midwest - specifically in Kansas.
This also seems to have a slightly more waxy texture, more like dolomite. Some of my Sagebrush Jasper pieces are not waxy.
I guess dolomite is common enough, and manganese dendrites are common enough. But still, Kansas is flat and east of the Rockies, and I think sites like Dry Creek are high in the Rocky mtns. It also seems to be about 500mi apart as the crow flies, and 700mi as plotted by google maps.

That is really pretty stuff. If he decides to sell some I'd be interested.

I would also be interested in some of Denny's rough. This is way prettier than most of the dendritic opalite I see around here or on ebay. Love the orange and yellow in the background.

Denny is getting the rough from a friend that knows the landowner. I am not clear how much he had, but he did mention having more to cut.
He is old and old style. His card does not have an email, only a phone#. If you really want to speak with him, PM me and I will give you the number.
He will still be at the Topeka show tomorrow. He has a few more pieces of triple-fist rough. I picked the most scenic. At least two of hte others seemed to be much more crowded with dendrites.
I am going back to the show tomorrow to volunteer. I will ask him how much rough he has to sell.

That is pretty material. I too have similar specimens from Wyoming and Australia and some of the amethyst sage from Nevada has the dendrites on that golden background....Mel
