Hi, y'all - I have a 6" high speed grinder/buffer I got at Harbor Freight. It has a disc backer that has a velcro surface on it to hold the various discs or buffer heads. Unfortunately, the sanding discs that came with it are el-cheapo aluminum oxide for metals.
Are silicon carbide discs available anywhere that will work with this grinder/polisher? Or do I have to get some other type of disc backer for them? Thanks, Rick

do you want to use SC? I use the 5" diamond pads on mine; love them.

Thanks, Don - Seem those are all aluminum oxide, though.
Hey, itsandbits - Where do you get the 5" diamond pads? I was thinking of silicon carbide since the discs I've seen are really inexpensive. How pricey are the diamond ones? Thanks, Rick

those prices seem half decent; I paid $80 for a 9 pc set here in Canada a few months agoand the guy is only 100k away so he shipped for free, He only had up to 3000grit though plus 2 buff stages. That finishes most sstuff but I'd like to try some higher grits

Automotive body work uses SC sandpaper to do the wet sanding with. I have found 400, 600, 1000, 2000 and 3000 discs in automotive parts stores. Or go to a Sherwin Williams or any other paint store and ask there. Sheets of it is found in some grits at Home Depot. I think they only had 400 and 600. The higher grits I found at auto place.

Mcgill's warehouse has em in diamond.I have 3 cheapo bench grinders with 4 inch plates i attached and then glued 4 inch diamond pads normally used on velcro rig.100,200,400,800,1600 and 3000 grits.RPM is 3600,perfect for velcro backs.I polish slabs, geodes whatever on this rig.Runs very wet as they are sprayed w/water(3600 rpm).Small slabs are done in a few minutes. Also look at Grandquartz, the counter top supply company.
