OK, I'm reading this fiction book about hunting dinosaur fossils in New Mexico. In the book there is info about the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary. or K-T line. This is the time period when the dinosaurs left our planet.
Has anyone collected material from these areas? I'm thinking how cool it would it be to have some of that kind of history on the coffee table.
Might have to plan a trip.

Thanks for the link. There must be some boards (like our rock tumbling hobby) out there too. Time to do a little studying.

The K-T boundary can literally be found all over the world. Anywhere there are rocks that straddle the period ~65 million years ago when the meteor hit the yucatan. Just find some rocks of the proper age, and you can have that little bit of history on your coffee table!

Bill, Google "dinosaur fossil hunting new mexico" and you'll come up with a weath of information. Or try this USGS site for info on where the K-T boundary lies in the Raton basin, Colorado and New Mexico: esp.cr.usgs.gov/info/kt/index.htmlWhat's the title of the book? It sounds interesting... Jean

When I was at Dinosaur Natl. Monument in Vernal UT (I know, not NM), they were talking about digs you can do on a volunteer basis with (I think) the park service, where you go be a paleontologist for a week and dig up dino bones in the good areas. It looked pretty fun. You should probably call the rangers at the monument if you're interested, for more info. There are also lots of fee dig dino bone places if you google it, as I did just after leaving there. ;-) Cool stuff.

Thanks everyone! jean, The book is Tyrannosaur Canyon by Douglas Preston (2005). One of those page turners. I did join the Fossil Forum today. Looks like I'll have to add bones to my rockhounding.

John, By chance I bought the book at a used book store for a buck. I've read some Preston/Child and enjoyed them. Looks like there may be a few more Douglas Preston books to read.

I just got this book (Tyrannosaur Canyon by Douglas Preston) on Christmas eve, in a batch of them already read and passed along by my mom and sister. I read the entire book cover-to-cover yesterday - WOW! A page turner, indeed.
While reading it, I recalled this thread from October. Just had to locate the thread, and and tell everyone it's definitely worth the read. And thanks, Bill. Jean

Just be careful and not get caught with even a tiny bone in your car when you are racing for home. Stiff penalties so check that out also. Most everyone does it but......... Jim

Ha, I missed this thread but love that book. It was actually rattling around in my brain a couple weeks back, but I couldn't remember what the hell it was called! What luck!
