I sucked at school due to going climbing on - you guessed it! Luckily I passed in Geology (and 1 other) and managed to go and do a certificate in Surveying for Mines. Later a degree in Geology and later a Masters in hydro & hydrogeol. So, on paper, I know some sh*t. Unfortunately I've forgotten most of it. All that school still sucks and you can't beat just getting out looking for rocks in the open air. Recently returned from the mountains near Malaga, Spain where we found (ahem) a marble quarry, disused of course) at Casaraborela and might have located a few specimens, including stromatolite! Also at cote d'argent in France, picking up naturally polished quartz pebbles, jasper, carnelian and agate. Simple but beautiful. I don't own much by way of gear. I have a cheap rotary tool and (for landscaping and building) an angle grinder, but this is a bit wasteful on any smaller samples. I'm casually thinking of building my own tumbler - maybe solar powered. Starting now, lets just see how long this idea takes to come to fruition! I've been picking up rocks and shoving them in ruc-sacs since I was little. Probably around 40 years ago. I now carry my own as my dad is getting past it . In fact, I now have 3 kids who do the same and I mostly carry theirs (within reason) too!

Warm welcomes round here - thanks everyone!
I'm just installing a mosaic-tile floor in the kitchen. The boxes say 'quartzite' but what do you know - it is schist. I love schist, simple fool that I am. The individual tiles are about 1" square - some are spotted / patterned and I'm really hoping I might have a few left over!
Now I just need some time when I'm not doing the floor and then I can start getting all creative!
