I dunno about that one, Ed. I'm not seeing Black Sabbath there. lol!
Sue, what site? We went in a dried up washbed and it was a ton of fun. Along the ledges on the sides of the area we could see the schist it was washing out of. Some of the pieces I posted up here are more rough than others so you can see what's going on. It's a lot of fun and pretty easy picking if you have a similar site. Just be willing to sit down and sift through the gravel. They're really small but you'll be able to see them after you find your first. Enjoy and post what you find!

It's a new site that MAGMA opened....in NC. Our 25 yr old son is going with us. Isn't it neat when the adult children come back to hang out with the old folks because we have fun hobbies?! Sue

Looks like a very successful hunt to me. Glad you found some, hope to have the opportunity someday.

Those are in the mountains of north middle Georgia.I think they call them fairy crosses and the geologist calls it staurolite?

The state stone of Georgia is Staurolite.Learned that when looking your stuff up on the net.I have seen nice specimens for sale in the north Georgia mountain gift shops.Fannin county is a big source and that county is loaded w/public land.I think it is found in creeks where it has washed out of it's matrix.Amazing crystals

Hi James!
The park had a seperate piece of land, a dried washbed where they sent people to pick the stones. It does just as you say, wash right out of the matrix and run off into creeks and wash beds. We had a lot of fun finding it!!!
