Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation and tactical support ought to do ya'!
It just gets harder and harder for those of us who are over 40 and think we're 20! Sue

. I had a psychotic horse when I was younger too... she was a greenbroke 1/2 Arabian mare, what a monster. It didn't sound like you broke anything because it's pretty hard to break something STEPPING, just because of pain reflex. Falling is another matter, you can't control your landing. At your age, you probably won't be all better for 4 weeks or more... you might want to go easy with the psychotic horse...

as someone who has had torn ligaments in the ankle, I can empathize. did the doc do an arthrogram? It could be simply that you stretched the ligaments rather than tore them. If they are torn, you will be at reduced strength and agility on rough terrain for a long time. consider a cast as a short-term measure. It's a pain, but not as bad as having a weak ankle for the next couple years.
Good luck.

Helen, the stepping into a big hole turned into a falling *L*. I'm getting clumsy in my old age. I went down like a dead tree *L*
Matt: In these day of somewhat rationed health care ( I'm on medicare now) I'll have to admit the doc did not seem disposed to refer me to a specialist for more tests *L*. I seem to be recovering at a faster pace than usual though so apparently the damage, though painful, was not major. Took young Hoppy to horse clinic ( school) this morning and loped him and trotted him for about three hours and am feeling only a little discomfort ( pointy cowboy boots ain't made for sore ankles and feet!) so I'm pretty happy with how things seem to be going.....Mel

*L* Helen, unlike all your stupid political posters, my horse makes me smile, even laugh. Makes me feel like a 20 year old again with the wind in my hair except I don't have much hair now *L*. Have another ride tomorrow if it don't rain. Yee Haw!....Mel
