So, a couple of really nice Aussie's stop by tonight to buy one of JC's cars. One of them saw my rock and we began talking briefly about rock and lapidary. Anywho, turns out that one of guys, uncle owns a Cooper Pedy mine and has been hoarding opal. He is now 89 years old and no longer does anything with the opals. The guys will be coming back beginning of December and asked me if I would like a box! Of course I said YES!! The size he motioned with his hands was that of a large flat rate box! CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS? I am still in shock! I thought he meant a tiny pendant box. I am so grateful! And I CANT WAIT!!

I will post pics when he brings the box by. I know it will come. I am pretty sure the opal will still be in rough matrix. Do not know much about Coober Pedy except it is BEAUTIFUL! I am so excited! I just want one large enough to cab and wrap a pendant for me. Opal is my birthstone.

Sheri: Coober Pedy opal has been long known for its stability........which came about form the practice of leaving the opal exposed on the ground. This was a practice until recently, that has changed due to Chinese buyers. Ahywhoo, Coober Pedy opal from a hoard should be great, and stable. Actually any uncracked opal hoarded dry should be stable. Woody

That's pretty awesome and kind of them to send you some opals! Coober Pedy is really nice opal and has nice pinfire. I think you'll enjoy cabbing them, and maybe try carving some of it, too, Sheri? Just cabbed my first Coober Pedy, Allen's Rise Seam Opal, and Lightning Ridge last week. Disastrous. lol. Found it easier to dop with wood glue, clear finger nail polish, and matchsticks.
