I've had decent luck sending pacakges overseas until recently. A package I sent to Australia has not arrived and it's been two weeks to the day. A package that was sent to me from there arrived in a week.
I went to the post office this morning and they told me it generally took 2-4 weeks to Australia (this after being told two weeks ago that it took 6-10 days) and there was no way to track the package.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I could track a package so that if it is lost I might be able to have it "found"? Apparently using the USPS for flat rate boxes may not be the best way to go in these cases.

I think you get tracking with Priority Mail International but once the USPS delivers to the receiving country's postal system it is out of their hands. I've tracked delayed packages to Canada before and they usually track as far as Canadian Customs. They sometimes stay there for weeks.

yes, there is only real tracking with USPS Global Express - very expensive.

in my experience, you do get a tracking number even with flat rate....have you tried to enter the number on the usps.com site? if you paid for it at the PO and didn't get a copy of the #, if you have an idea of what date you may have posted it and have a halfway freindly Post Office Clerk, they might be able to help.
too late for this time, but it's well worth the time to open up an online account at USPS, even if you don't mail much. it's cheaper and you get a hard copy of all your transactions, including the tracking number. KD

The only International mail that has a tracking number is Global Express Mail, which is alot more expensive than Priority International Flat Rate.
I have had a package to Australia take 5 weeks before, just wait it should show up. Depends on what happens at Customs, if you don't fill out your paperwork properly it will take longer. (The one that took 5 weeks was because I had forgotten to sign the paperwork so they really checked it over.)

KD Again, the post office does not provide a tracking number and won't even if you want to pay for one. I took my receipt back to them and there was nothing they could do, I like your second idea and will follow through with it.

you can get a tracking number if you do International Priority online, but it is usually only good until it leaves US hands. It is not updated for any foreign handling or delivery.

Hi, Sheltie, I think your usps receipt should have on it the estimated delivery time for your package to arrive in OZ. Maybe you could contact the person to make sure that it arrives?
