Does anyone have any designs/plans. pictures/ideas, etc., regarding using slabs to make wind chimes? I've got an abundance of slabs and it seems like this might be something I'd like to try to make. If you have anything you'd be willing to share, I'd appreciate it.

I've been working on that idea too. I just plugged in "wind chimes" on google and found a bunch of ideas. I'm working with bottle chimes too.

Here is a set I made several years back, been through some major monsoon storms and still holding up. Tim

I was looking for just the chimes by themselves but couldn't find a source other than really cheap ones from Kingsley. I hadn't thought of making wind chimes entirely from slabs but may look into that. My wife is into stained glass big time so I may try to get some ideas from her as well.

Those are an awesome set of wind chimes, Tim! What are the best kind of agates to use for wind chimes? Recommended thickness of the slabs? What did you use to drill the holes (and manage to not break/crack the slabs?)

I made these out of some Brazilain agate slabs I had laying around, they are probably 3/16 thick. I drilled them with a dremmel and a small diamond drill bit I got from Harbor Freight, worked well, but took a while to drill. I would definitely use a slab with no fractures, you can see why below. . As far as the sound they sound good, nothing like the tuned ones you can get. Tim

The commercially available ones are usually Brazilian agate but likely any agate would work. If you plan to hang outside beware monofilament line breaks down in the sun.

We are trying to use the Obsidian needles I picked up from Cal as the dangly parts. Still in the works though.
