Hello,
I am new the group and new to rock hounding. I have read some of the posts here and will be slowing going through a lot more of them.
I have always enjoyed finding cool rocks, but this is new to actually go hunting for them and actually trying to do something with them. This past summer, my sister and I went to Moab, Utah for our 3rd summer trip in a row. We spent 9 days there this time, mostly hiking in Arches National Park. We met some rock hounds at the hotel place where we were staying. So, we went to the local rock shop, which was like a museum, and we each bought some cool rocks. We aso went to the BLM office and got a map and list of places to go to. We only got to go to one place, but we both came home with a bucket of rocks that we think are cool. Nothing fancy compared to real collectors, but a good start for a beginner. We really don't even know what we have. Some agate. And who knows what.
I have one paper book (small) and 2 kindle books. I definitely need to find something better for identification. Something with LOTS of photos Reading descriptions of various rocks and minerals does not do anything for me visually.
I have also bought a rock tumbler. Lortone for 3lb capacity. I haven't tried it yet as I don't know what I have, so I don't know what woudl be good to try yet.
So, I will have lots of questions. First, I would love recommendations for books that have great ID photos. Or websites. I see one listed as a topic here, but the link goes to a page that is currently being updated and not available. I would also love a book or website that tells how to use a rock tumbler (rotary). I bought mine used, so no directions.
I found 2 rock and gem shows in my area, but they are both this weekend, and I only found them on Thursday, so too late to ask for the days off.
Looking forward to reading more here, learning more, and enjoying my new hobby.
