I got some flint from Mel, off his Texas ranch. This is my second attempt at knapping this material raw. The first was not too pretty. Most of my knapping has been pressure work, but this material is too hard for that. This is totally percussion. Woody

Looks like you are coming along! Your percussion work is pretty clean overall, might abrade a bit more to help with step fractures. Texas rock can be tough when it's raw, a little heat treatment can make it gloss up and chip easier.

Dang Woody that looks pretty thin. You do better with the percussion flaking than I. Most mine look like tent pegs and are too darn thick. Like Michael says, this local flint is very tough to work and eats up my copper tools too. I have better luck when I pick up heat treated spalls off the Indian campsites but it's funny, most the spalls on the camps are not heat treated. and yet they still worked them. Them native Americans must have had really strong hands....Mel

Mel: You are right about this stuff being tough. I had to build heavy platforms, and learn to whack it much harder than the obsidian I am used to. Our ancestors usually spalled material before heat treating, which is the reason we either spall, or slab first. I am going to slab, and cook the next batch before knapping.Woody

Very cool! I look forward to seeing your efforts after the heat treatment. Some of the spalls from the campsites are much more colorful than the raw material too. Out in the shop I have a heat treated hunk Harley ( agatemaggot) sent me. Now that the weather is cooler, I'm gong to have to try knapping it to see if it changes the working characteristics very much.....Mel

Mel: You would have to chain me to something heavy on your ranch, or I would run amok looking for these spalls. Heat almost always enhances colour, and also makes flint shinier.
