Well I've been taking metalsmithing class, but the teacher was out of town last week and i wanted to try to get my gift for my wife done or close to done. Everything went well until i tried to etch the whole thing before i put a black patina on it. The acid dissolved the bezel. Oh well i learned a lot and it has a sort of "rugged decay" thing going on. The back

Yep...I etch prior to any soldering. I will tape the area where the bezel goes so it will be perfectly intact to make the fit flush for soldering. What are you using to etch?

Actually, John, I think it goes well with the stone. Sometimes our blunders make the piece and I kinda think that's what happened here. I like it!

Thanks Cathy
I actually wanted it to look like this, but enough of the bezel is gone that it won't hold the stone well and it could snag.

I thought silver was one of the things that acid would not touch. My lesson for the day. I hope you can get it straightened out without starting all over. Jim

Hang onto the silver. You can use it for casting, or you can make balls out of it.
It looks like the bezel does not meet end to end at the top. Did you do that on purpose? I like the look a lot.

Oh it isn't silver, I used copper. I was seeing copper jewelry with a nice satin black patina so i thought I'd use some and lightly wax it to keep it from staining skin.

Google up saltwater etching for your next try, it is probably a lot less corrosive. Fatsister taught us at our rock club and it works!

Pat, the bezel was a perfect fit all the way around the stone until the acid ate it.

John: With Ferric Chloride or salt water etching, an oil based paint pen or blue tape can act as a resist. I just find it easier to etch, then solder. These were done with a paint pen.

Thanks again all Scott, i planned on using liver of sulfur, but wanted to etch the metal surface first so it would take better.

Cathy
PS... And notfurnuthin butt...there are enough of you guys on here that do this that you could make it a collaborative effort! (Nod's as good as a wink you know.....)
