Some friends gave me an early Xmas present on thurs... All of the countries are laid in with various gems/rocks/shells! I hadn't ever seen anything like this before & I was totally blown away. (she saw it on the Home Shopping Network! LOL) Anyway...I thought it was cool & wanted ya'll to see it.

First off I have to say it's beautiful, please don,t be tempted to take it apart & tumble it! I think I saw one at Costco here in Canada - my daughter pointed it out to me - I'm liking SUDAN & FRANCE! That must weigh a ton!

That is a nice one. I looked at lots of models a few years back to get a grad present for a friend of mine. Many use crushed powdered stones (like the oceans are made of). Ths one seems to have used intact stone, so it is 1st class.

Awesome gift! Now I wonder how they grind all those curve surfaced slabs to match and manage to do all that work and be able to sell them in mass on HSN and for a price anyone can afford? Must have huge teams of itty bitty rock elves.Wow!...mel

OHhhhhh! I'm so glad you guys like it cause I sure did!
I weighed the sucker & it's almost 14 lbs. and stands about two feet tall. My girlfriend said she saw some at Costco last year before Xmas and they were spendy. (no...I didn't ask!lol)
The maker is "Macheli" & when I get more time, if anyone is interested, I'll try to get some closeups of how it was laid in.

I like the globe !! ( aaaallloooootttttt ) ;D ;D --- a couple years ago I was in San Fran and got to watch a glass "artist" make some small ones -- he would lay out the fine glass ( colors) on a table, then take a small semi-melted glob and roll it in the fines , refire it so it was melted then put on another layer -- needless to say , if too much pressure was put in the roll then you had a flat earth ( or warped ) ;D --- and even tho it was glass I had to have one! but I think I like your's better --wanna trade? ;D
