hi rth members, i'm going to dana point to help my marine son and his family move to il, after his wife has 1-2 brain surgeries. going out there for 2 weeks and driving the southern route back to il. any good rock hounding areas around there? thanks.

dunno about the rock sites out there but i wish you all well with the surgeries!! I know how rough that can be on a family!!. I found this... Illinois is a good state for rockhounders. The Mazon Creek fossil sites are well known throughout the world. Illinois also is famous for its fluorite deposits. At least nine meteorites have been found in the state including the Benld Meteorite that, in 1938, hit and penetrated a garage and ended up embedded in the seat of an automobile. In addition, the Field Museum is one of the finest museums in the world for rockhounders. dadohs, i've got a lot of mazon fossil peices, i am a member of a club in the area where they strip mined coal. many in the tailing piles. also a farmer friend lets me detect, rock hound, and look for indian artifacts on his fields.

The best rockhounding will be 100 miles east no matter what route you take...only a short drive for Southern Californians. Oceanview is only about fifty miles. Semper Fi. Woody
