I really enoy slabbing but there is a lot of downtime while the slabs are being cut. I don't enjoy cabbing (perhaps because I haven't tried it) and don't plan onlearning how to do it (my wife does it right now). I have a vibrating lap to polish the slabs and know that you can use a wet dry polisher to do the same thing in a fraction of the time.
I'd like to be able to do something hands on to polish slabs other than the wet dry polisher or the lap. Is there anything? Many of my slabs are way too big to try to use my cabbing machine so that is out. Are there any other ways to polish slabs other than what I mentioned above? I wouldn't mind the wet dry polisher other than the cost (almost $600). I do this for my own and family benefit, not to sell and have had a VERY hard time trying to justify to myself the money I put out for a slab saw, various tumblers, lap, cabbing machine, Richards buffer, etc.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sheltie I polish a lot of them by putting in my vibratory polisher. I do about 3 or 4 lbs. at a time with room left for smaller mix to get best results. I achieve mirror finish results this way with minimal effort and material cost.

Please help me out here. Are you talking about a vibrating tumbler (like a Thumler) or something else? More importantly, why aren't there any decent rocks near where the two of us live? ;D

Sheltie we seem to be stuck in the land of chalk. Too bad limestone doesn`t polish! I have a 5 lb. bowl on my vibrating tumbler. I polish slabs up to about 4" in it. I mix in a lot of smalls to keep them from all sticking together and help keep them moving along. It does a great job too.

I intend to build large flat lap for 18" magnetic diamond discs. should be able to flatten and polish some bug stuff using that.

I saw that when you put in the forum originally and thought what a neat idea it was. I'd try it but I don't have the room for it. I envy your ingenuity!
