*raised eyebrow* Nice piece of botryoidal material, probably agate, travertine or such, but whale vomit? I don't think so. I'd think the only thing that would come out of a whale that might petrify might be ambergris, and it comes outa the other end and floats to shore as round lumps so it could probably be found as a fossil kind of like amber. *S*.....mel

How do they know it's puke? Just like dino poo, do they do a "dna" test on it or what? I have a hard time believing that someone knows for sure it's whale puke or dino poo...

Mel is right in his thinking that it might be ambergris. The only problem today is that there are fewer and fewer people around that can ID that sort of stuff. It comes out of Sperm Whales and the thought is that it's something that is the result of the digesting of the beaks of Giant Squid. Amazingly ambergris is even mentioned in the Bible! At one time ambergris was very valuable and yes a chunk that size could have gotten $18 grand for it. But, as the Sperm Whale is "endangered" selling anything coming from said animal is a crime. One thing comes to my mind is....why would you want to keep this one? They do come in different shapes, sizes, colors, textures etc. so I'd pass on this one and wait for something a little more esthetic! Because since this stuff is also known as "A whale pearl", I would think that there would have to be specimans that are a little better looking than this. Neat things that Mother Nature can throw at us! And just think ladies, that this stuff is used in perfume! Yummy! I'm thinking about the other day when my wife held out her wrist to me and asked: "What do you think of this?"

jrtrio: Actually I don't think the material is anything at all from a whale. I think it's more like grape agate or some of the botryoidal forms of cave onyx ( travertine). All the ambergris I've seen is in rounded lumps not unlike the pellets that all the raptors I deal with regurgitate except I think ambergris comes out the other end of the digestive ,most of the time at least. It is interesting that the ambergris and the owl and hawk pellets are created and expulsed for the same reason, to wrap and aid in easy purging of sharp or irritating objects eaten by the predator. I was just trying to say that if some product that was purged from a whale did fossilize, ambergris would have the most chance of being extruded and deposited in such a way that conditions for petrification would be present. Since ambergris is frequently washed up on beaches and covered by silt , sand etc, it would be a more likely candidate for preservation....mel

I don't know jack about much, but if you vomit in water wouldn't it scatter with the current? - would it be solid like that? It could be something from a dead whale's stomach, but unless it was a partly digested something/someone, would it be that shape?
KD: I too thought if it would tumble?

If that is whale vomit, then that was one very sick whale, because it appears to have regurgitated its intestines. I guess that whale could have honestly told his buddies that, "I puked my guts out". ;D -Don

OH MY FREAKIN GOD! Did someone start this thread to wierd me out? I swear...go look at the thread:Oh fie on those nasty things...they eat gray matter...don't they Doc. (Or they use it for a degreaser) I also heard they use it to make some of the most expensive perfume in the world...kinda like they use to usf4fe ambergris. (whale vomit...don't believe me? Look it up!) Could that be why some of us here on this board have been showing signs of stress? Intolerance of others?
I posted this the other day on a thread...go to get updated with ya'll & find this! Either we are all becoming in tune with each other or something is infiltrating our brains, I'm not sure which! (just too funny!)
OK...I grew up thinking Ambergris was vomit...& now you're telling me it's crap? Can someone PLEASE make me understand?

A shop keep near me, brought me some petrified whale barf. It looked like amber, but cut and polished differently. The color was off also. Now, a piece that was mineralized, that would be something! I got some dinosaur Mr. Hankey, that stuff is something to see. Now, if I could polish petrified whale yak. Life if good.
