Geoff, there is one near Livingston, about I'd say,110 miles from Sugarland.A whole day is needed to see everything there, especially if you get the owner talking to you.Need to call before going to make sure they are open.Going to it through a small community, you will wonder, aint nothing out in this, but you will be surprised when you come to it. I went there for some palm There arent many shops to be found around. snuffy

There are more to the west, in and around the Austin area if I remember correctly. But I can tell you for sure that there are not any that I am aware of in the Houston area. So Sorry. Sugarland is on the southeast side or Houston which is mostly coastal area. No rock shops!!

Natures Treasures in Austin is worth the visit. One location has a rough rock yard, and the other has many fossils and crystals. www.ntrocks.com/

Natures Treasures has combined the two stores now to one location on IH 35 just north of 38 1/2 st. on the feeder road. There is a giant showroom with polished rocks, fossils and crystals etc. and the Rock Depot is in a smaller building next to it. There is the lapidary rough and supplies. Larger rough is outside in the yard between the 2 buildings. But it`s about 2 1/2 hrs. to Houston. In Smithville is a small rock shop run by a lovely older lady named Lorene. It is on Hwy 71 and is almost an hour less drive from Houston. Or head to Sommerville Lake and collect some petrified wood. It`s prime pet wood land.

The Brazos River in Rosenberg is about 18 miles from you.Dont know the access availability, but there is a city park on the river.Up the road a few miles, the river runs through Richmond too.I've seen photos over the years on here of members finds.Maybe Allen, darstcreek is familiar with it. I know the river is low, hasnt been significant rain in a while.
