I couldn't see another place to put this, so here it is.
My 16" Covington vibrating lap was working fine and then it started to make a noise as if it was struggling to keep going. This kept up for about 30 seconds - and it was shaking, not just vibrating, violently - and then it stopped. No circuit breaker problem, outlet is fine, no smoke, everything appears to be ok, except that it isn't. There is no inline fuse to the lap. It was not overloaded. Any ideas other that replace the motor?

I would check the motor bearings. I can't remember if the pan support is mounted on springs but I would check those too. Was the motor hot? It should have an internal thermal overload that automatically resets. Some of the Covington laps have the motor touching the table under so they run too hot. Sorry, I can't remember how they shake. Is it a counterweight on the shaft? If so see if it came loose.

John,
The motor was not hot but we are letting it "rest" for awhile to see if it somehow overheated. I can't see anything else visually wrong with it. I wouldn't know what to look for regarding a counterweight, but as I said, nothing looks out of place.

I've found Covington to be very helpful every time I've called for help. They might be able to help pinpoint the problem on the phone... Is it still under warranty?

I remember the motor housing is down so shaft is up. There is likely a metal bar attached to the motor shaft that causes the vibration. Pull the pan out of the way and see what you can see. Post a picture if you can.
