I just got back from looking at huge rock piles that the son of a deceased member of our club is going to donate to the club for the rock sale at our show. I forgot to take my camera but it was real foggy so the photos probably wouldn't show up very well anyhow. The dad was a longtime member of our club - the Mother Lode Mineral Society - as well as very active in the California Federation Of Mineralogical Societies (CFMS). He was president of the CFMS many years ago. Today the son had a rock sale for the club members only. Because I don't really need more rocks I didn't buy but only 4 slabs and two rocks. All the equipment sold within a couple hours, 20" and 18" saws, rock lathe, trim saws, cab machines, sphere machine, etc. The HP saw in fair condition went for $100.!!! I got a new, unused 8" Hi Tek machine without any laps for $20.
Monday we have recruited some members to start loading the rock piles . We are taking them to another member's place for storage and sorting. There will be at least 10 large trailer loads initially. In the Spring we have to go there and dig through mounds of dirt/rocks to retrieve another 6 or 7 loads.
The son wants all the proceeds from our rock sale at the annual show to go to an endowment in his dad's name. We already have two scholarships every year for college students in the Geology field, so we will add a new one for this occasion.
What a day!
