UPDATE: My wife found the "stolen" jewelry! Still interested in an ID. Photos down the page.
Hi all,
My wife and I just came back from a trip to Mexico. We don't get to take trips like this very often so it was pretty special.
Anyhow, we bought a (not cheap) complete set of jewelry there for her, and she loved it, but it was stolen from her checked luggage (she feels horrible, I didn't know she was packing it in the checked bag, I would have stopped her)
This stone was all over down there, and I haven't seen anything like it. I can't find it in any google image searches, and to confuse the matter the folks selling it all called it something different, although they all seemed to think it came from near Mexico City.
The best description I can give is that it looks like something between turquoise and chrysocolla. it is opaque and teal-colored - but it has a high concentration of lemon yellow and light orange swirled in. The yellow and orange are pastel-like - not super-super bright, and make me think of sherbet.
Like I said it was all over - in playa del carmen, at the resort we stayed at, in Puerto Morelos and we saw it a few other places as well - I guess you would say it was in the Mexican Riviera area, primarily set into .925 sterling.
I wouldn't be surprised to find out that it wasn't from Mexico at all, or even if it wasn't some sort of manufactured stone.
The one guy who seemed to be more knowledgeable than most said it was chrysocolla, but like I said I can't find anything anywhere that looks like it.
I'd like to see if I can get some and use it for my wife's Christmas present.
Thanks for any help super-sleuths!

You might want to do a google "image" search on "Lemon chrysocolla" to see if any of that looks similar. That may or may not (more likely not) be chrysocolla, since it is coming out of China.

Scott, it is similar, but more "swirly", like more seperated colors. I will check it out though.

Nice Scott, that parrot wing is beautiful, and I would say probably prettier than the stuff we looked at, but it's not the same. This lime turquoise is the most similar I've seen: www.barse.com/store/cat/lime-turquoise-sterlingbut it still has the lines that separate the colors and doesn't show any of the very light orange color we saw. The stuff we saw was all over down there, is apparently a somewhat recent find. You've done an amazing job sleuthing, but I would describe this stuff as a bit "creamier" - very pastel, soft colors, swirled together, very light orange and yellow and a consistent turquoise color green/blue versus differing shades of blues and greens. We stayed with my wife's parents in their timeshare, I'll see if I can get them to buy another piece so I can take a photo of it. Thanks again all

herrch: How about primavera stone? it can contain a huge number of copper minerals, chrysacolla, turquoise etc and often shows swirls and patches of blue, green, yellow orange etc. It comes from Arizona and Mexico and probably any other copper mining area and is used quite a lot in jewelry....Mel

Wow Mel, some of what I see is very similar, but there's news! She found her jewelry! I can't believe it, but she had stuck it in a pocket of some dirty clothes and had forgotten it was there! Here is the stone set in sterling: I suspect that this piece may be manufactured stone, I don't see the orange that is in this piece in the other pieces: Of all that I've seen, the primavera seems the most similar, although not identical. Also, supposedly this is some sort of chrysocolla and is a new find. I'm still going to try to find out what this is, but thanks all for the help. I'll keep this thread updated if I ever find it!

Scott, I am not convinced it isn't fake. <smile> Well, if it's real 0.925 silver and the 'stones are pretty (and they are) then what you have is real!! <still smiling!> Take care John. Find me some of that Parrot Wing stuff!

possibly dioptase, but the amount of yellow... hmm.
microcline, though that is a pretty brilliant yellow... amazonite...
aurichalcite variations...
Now ADAMITE is known for brilliant yellows, and turquoise color, it is found in durango mexico, I suppose the possibility exists that a variation would produce the colors together... In a situation where it has to be determined, remove one link from the bracelet, take it to a local university with a mineral lab. You will learn EXACTLY what it is. ;D
