Wow! It has been a long while since I was part of a forum! THIS site grabbed me by the short and curlies and I am glad to have found it!
My wife, sister and I are TOTAL amatures as far as the big picture lapadary arts go. I personally have been polishing cabs and tumbling for about 20 years. I was fortunate, recieving a "Genie" and saws, tumblers etc. from my aunt after my uncle passed away. I was younger, and figgered that the machines do it all, learning there is a LOT more to lapidary arts over the years, I both cringe and laugh at my hard headed views.
I did teach myself to do some respectable cabbing, and I do one of the hardest shapes, (HEARTS) on standard wheels.
My wife the recipient of those. My sister and wife suddenly dove headlong into "RoCkS" about a year or two back, and they pester me mercilessly! Our favorite pastime is rock HUNTING, and I am a Jasper/Fire Agate/Opal fiend on the machines.
The wife and sister mostly tumble and the make "Rain Chains" I have started to add my metal work/woodwork into some artistic creation, and I prefer to "gift" out my work, much to the consternation of my wife.
AnYwAy, Cher-Da-Rock is the little name play we came up with, our desire is to "update" and "opinionate" as well as "elaborate" on rockhounding publications versus what we have found in our adventures to locations given. We are in the southwest, and most of our rockhounding is centered there, tho I have done a bit of fossil hunting back east.
I also "PRODGE" which means work on projects/build contraptions, my latest is an INCREDIBLY efficient "Tire Tumbler" a rock tumbler utilizing a large tire. It spins along at 3mph and whacks stones smooth in a day or two. It also creates buckets of ground slurry, and eats 60/90 grit like a pig!
There is much more to tell and ask, I just hope to provide knowledge and smiles and not just questions, and I will be posting pictures like a BANDIT!
We like to Cher da Rock, thank you for letting us onboard! ;D
