Howdy folks, Here's a little taste of South African Jasper rough form the rock pile; Thanks for looking.....Mel Dendritic Vogesite which has pictures too. More normal Vogesite Rainbow Jasper. hardly ever see this anymore. It looks grainy but takes a fine polish. Autumn Jasper. This often has nice pictures too. Flame Jasper: Mugglestone, sometimes called Springtime Jasper, Sunset Jasper and several other names. Very hard to slab, a mix of red jasper, yellow jasper and hematite. If cut diagonally it has nice scenes too.

I got some of the rainbow and autumn from Kim. I have a huge piece of rainbow. I went back for some flame, but she had disappeared.

good luck with that. most of the rock is considerably north of the cape in the Greensvelt. Also it is mined in remote regions and goes right into containers for bulk export. As with some Australian rock, a South African wanting a small lapidary parcel would likely have to order it from the states. While it is catching on in some places, lapidary *as a hobby* did not really develop outside of the modern USA.

Beautiful photos, Mel. In a month I didn't see any rocks at all, just red dirt! Well, I saw rocks like the Kruger Tablets but not agates, pictures, or anything workable...South Africa is huge, and I suspect the tourist areas and birding areas are not the mining areas.

I had some of the vogesite, autumn jasper, flame jasper and mugglestone that all came from Kim. I wonder why she disappeared? I haven't heard from her in years.

Mel, did you get any of Kim's Koi Jasper. I got a really nice piece. In fact, this is Kim's photo: Here are her pictures of the chunk of rainbow I got from her. Still have not cut either one.

Wow that is a fine boulder of Rainbow Daniel! I just got the two fist sized hunks and some tumble rough. Was surprised how well the tumble came out. Shaped up and shined up with ease. I didn't get any of the Koi because I thought I had a big hunk in my pile but it turned out I did not.....Mel

Wow, what a feast on the eyes. Those Vogesite's are especially neat. Personally though, I like the Autumn Jasper the best from all of the above, simply because of the color-straighten and the resulting contrasts.

LOL, must ask the same as Helen, Mel, are you buried in rocks? The colors are killer and haven't ever seen Vogesite before.
