I see that quite a few people burnish their stones after the final polish so I've looked around to see what people use and ivory soap seems to get mentioned quite often, what exactly is ivory soap? could i just use ordrinary soap or does ivory soap have some special properties that make it more suitable for this? And does it have to be soap or is there some other product I could use for burnishing.

Ivory Soap is a pure soap available in bars (hand/Face/body soap) or powder, laundry detergent.
You can get it at any grocery store.
Another soap/detergent used is 20 Mule Team Borax Laundry Detergent, which works better but there is some argument as to it's disposal after running due to it's nature.

Borax will kill your plants or lawn if you pour it on the ground. I use powdered Tide detergent. The only problem I have had with it was on some lapis. It was well polished but dull after the Tide burnish. I've never had that happen with agates and jaspers. Whatever you use needs to be a non sudsing/low sudsing detergent that can clean any residue from the rocks, media, and barrels.

Dreft powdered soap from the baby dept of Wally World works great. Borax as John said, works well but is highly toxic to plant life....Mel

I prefer borax because I pour it out behind the fence to keep the weeds down.

I have also used a white powdered soap for delicate fabrics called White Linens that works well too. Ivory is a pure soap where most are made with perfumes and other properties rather than cleaning.

I use shredded ivory soap, it is a bar soap with no scent, but it isn't magic. I have used a drop of dishwashing detergent with similar results.
