Hi, I am new, very new to tumbling. Though I have wanted to for years. I received a great Lotone tumbler, rough rock and all the required grits to get started for Xmas....yeah!
My problem is that I appear not to be strong enough to take the outside lid off the barrel. it seals so tight. which is great so there are no leaks, but if I can't get it open I can't tumble anything!!
Will they get easier to remove? Is there any helpful hints to make them easier to remove? Or am I stuck having to wait for my Husband to open for me?
Looking forward to your help and years of Rock talk to come

Hi Rocky!
Use your thumbs and every inch or so on the barrel, just beneath the lid, push real hard. Go around the entire barrel doing that and you will loosen the seal that has vacuumed on during the tumbling process. Even after that.... if it's really stubborn, a gentle nudge up with a flat head screw driver can also help break the vacuum. It should be able to remove easily after that.

If you are having trouble with the metal piece then use the washer on the lid to pry it off Bill

I always have to squeeze the sides to get it off. I tried a little vaseline, it didn't seem to help.

I always use the washer and wedge it in the small gap at the bottom edge of the metal lid and twist to release my lids. Works every time.

Loosen the nut, but don't remove it. Set the barrel on the table and push down on the nut. Always pops the metal lid loose for me.

Yep, as said metal washer pries the aluminum lid off, then slowly work the rubber edge away from the rubber gasket/lid thing until you can pop it out.

The vacuum will be a partial vacuum - otherwise you would never get it off. This happens to me a lot because I load it in the house (warm) and then tumble in the workroom (cold) so the air contracts. Take it into the warm or actively warm it a little to cause the air inside to expand. Presto!

Hello Roxane and Welcome! I have that problem often, so my technique is to gently press/squeeze the middle of the rubber barrel and the lid comes out more easily.

Roxane, now when you put the first lid back on make sure the barrel and edge of the lid are clean. Grit and pellets collect in the little notch and if there is enough the barrel can leak a little bit. I just wipe the edges down with a paper towel. Jason
