I have a new 16" HP slab saw which is also rated for a 14" blade. Can I also use a 12" blade on it? I'd like to use a narrower blade for some finer cuts, if possible. I just answered my own question by going to the HP site and the answer is yes. It has a 1" arbor. Any recommendations for the blade? It won't be used all that often, certainly not nearly to the extent of my 16"er.

you have to put a few inches more oil ... also rpm may be a little low

I have a 12 inch saw that I run at motor speed of 1725 and it cuts smooth as silk. Helen thought I had polished the slabs. Up until now I have not been able to afford an expensive blade so I am running a cheap crimped blade. Your saw has to be lined up perfectly or the blade will cut off to one side or the other and get smoking hot if you are making a long cut. I have spent several hours lining things up and straightening a blade. It is pretty tough lining up the blade shaft on a Lortone. This saw cuts pretty slow and that is probably why it cuts so smooth. I have only timed the the cut speed once and it cut 2 1/4 inches in 25 minutes. I do not have any experience with other saws or adjustable speeds. Jim

Jim: 1725 is a little high for a 12", closer to 11 is recommended, but likely within a range of tolorance - especially with slow feed. Is this a Lortone LS12? sheltie: just check you motor RPM and pulley sizes to may sure you are not too slow for the 12". I wouid say nothing below 900 rpm.

1725 would be fine with a Barranca or MK 303c but a crimped edge will most likely wear out a lot faster at the higher speed. That said, with the lortone I wouldn't change anything if you have a combination that gives such nice cuts. The old LS12 saws were 1"/5min a nice feed speed. Blade alignment is everything.

The HP website shows acceptance of 16",14", or 12" blades on the 16" model. But I'm wondering if since the HP saw's powerfeed is pulley driven, if using a 12" blade may reduce the linear feet per minute of the cutting surface of the blade enough that it becomes an issue on large, or very hard materials. When using the 12" blade, if you notice the powerfeed is too fast for the cutting action, you may be able to use a larger than factory pulley to slow the powerfeed down.
