I ordered a standard tumble charge from Ebersole Lapidary (Wichita). Their stage 1 is 60/90. Stage 2 is 400/800. 3 is Tripoli pe-polish. 4 is polish.
Does the jump from 1 to 2 sound like too much? I see others talking about 120/220 as step 2. I am wondering about getting some 120/220 and making it 5 steps instead of 4.
Just getting started. Got kids a 33b for Christmas. Thanks!

i would add it and make it a step 5 program. i've gone to a step 5 program anyway because i needed a finer pre-polish like your tripoli step. james is trying that tripoli too and his rocks have not yet failed.

Hey stubby, do you live close to Wichita? That is where I got my Lortone tumbler, some of my rocks as well as some of the wire for my wrapping. Tami

Sorry, not from Kansas. Northwest Ohio. My brother knew Val Ebersole. That's my only connection.

Funny you should mention it, I'm on step three of a twelve step program. Think it involves not drinking a half case of beer every day, or something like that, I was way too hammered to listen to what the guy was saying.

I just realized that my stage 3 grit is 600,not 400, then on to polish. I looked at my stones last night and for being in phase 3 they are not where I would like them to be. Do I need 5 stages? Is the 400 just not enough behind the 220?

A third step of 600 (in my humble opinion) is fine. (or medium fine, but I meant, OK) Anything in the range of 400-600 would constitute a third step. A 4th step would be 1000. Then on to the polish. Some skip the 1000 step. But I think you may get different opinions on that. I just think the polish can do a better job if you drop a 1000 grit step in before the polish. I'm usually not patient enough and go from 500 to polish, then wonder afterward why I didn't use the 1000 step like I promised I would. But I'm just a 'Dumb Swede' from Wisconsin, transplanted in Arizona.

So your are saying, 5 stages, but make the 4th 1000 grit (which I also don't have right now.) I suppose the lesson is: Patience Patience Patience ;D
