Back in the 1920's, my mom and her sisters were born in Alberta, Canada at a remote gold mine that my grandfather was supervisor of. During WWII, my mom wanted to go to school and become a geologist but went to USC in LA, CA and got her BA in nursing. To her dying day this past Thanksgiving, she wished she could have become a geologist because she loved rocks so much. She spent 64 years married to my dad and during that whole time she'd yell at him to stop the car and throw that pretty rock she saw off the side of the road into the trunk of the car. Drove my dad nuts. Their patio is full of leaverite rocks from all around the country.
Mom's oldest sister is currently dying of cancer and she lives in of all places, Morgan Hill, CA (famous for poppy jasper). She's 87 and has the same feelings about rocks as my mom. Found out her favorite stone is Lapis Luzuli. I remember a dealer at Quartzsite last year specialized in Lapis, straight from Afghanistan. Bought a large Lapis cab and egg for my aunt. Also threw into the box all the groove wrapped jasp-ag cabs I made for my mom that we gathered from our local Mojave Desert.
Here's the e-mail I received from my uncle last night after receiving the box of rocks I sent them. See, here is proof of the power rocks have and makes our hobby worth while. We don't sell our work and just give them away as gifts to friends and family.
"The package arrived this evening, the emotion was so thick you could cut it, she sat just fondly rubbing those stones for at least 30 minutes without a single word, thank you so much for such a wonderful gift to Georgia. I know it has not been a wonderful year for you, so I would like to compensate you for this if you would give me a ball park idea where to start, since I have no idea as to the value of these stones. She is truly delighted, both for the Lapis and the stones you made up for your Mother, those are really special for Georgia knowing they once were in the hands of her sister."
