My sterling has been getting more and more tarnished. I had been having trouble getting it shiny. Tarn X, Goddard's helped most items, but not all.

Since I had been tumble polishing sterling jumprings successfully, I thought I'd give the small size ( ~2 to 4mm wide) chains a whirl. It could only rip them apart or hopelessly entangle them.

So I tossed them in and crossed my fingers!

My first run was with just four chains. Took less than one minute to untangle them. Whew! ;D

Now it was time to do many at a time. I hooked 15 together. Took 11 minutes to undo them. ;D ;D

Here are the before and after photos. ;D ;D ;D

Here they tied at the ends before tumbling.

This jumbled mess is just out of the tumbler.

Jumbled mess somewhat straightened.

All straight, and it took about 12 minutes ;D

Looks like it worked! I have a small barrel with stainless media in it, it was used by the jeweler I bought the tumbler from but it is probably only 1/4 full (it is probably a 3# barrel) - do you know how much media/volume you use for polishing jewelry?

Also, when you tumble metal it gets harder, do you notice any negative effect on the chain? I wouldn't expect any negative effect as in theory the chain would just be "tougher" which should be good.

John, I think it worked. I have a small vibrating tumbler and used two pounds of steel shot (might be stainless steel shot) and just enough water to be visible. It fills the barrel half to 3/4 full. I also added a couple of drops of Dawn liquid detergent.

Haven't noticed any ill effects.

We have a tiny vibe unit with walnut dry media, haven't tried it yet. Lee

Pat, if you need to clean up silver often, the best thing on the planet is a Speed Brite. shopsnstores.com/speedbrite/ionic/index.php I simply can't say enough good about it. I also don't know how many I have sold over the years... not for them or me, just via word of mouth. It's great for all metals. I tumble in a lortone 3a all the time, too. 1 lb mixed jeweler's stainless steel shot. I use the tumbler to clean, harden and remove burrs and slight blemishes. I use the speedbrite to clean and then polish. You'd be shocked to see how dirty you thought clean stuff was!

I especially love throwing diamond jewelry in the speedbrite. WOW!
