I was fooling around with a piece of Red Ribbon Obsidian when I came across this pattern. It is something that I have never seen in any Obsidian. The piece is about 2-1/2" wide. On the back side I found this typical pattern for Red Ribbon Obsidian as I was grinding down to the color layer. Unfortunately it was only a small area of the whole piece. Here is an inverted view of the color layer. Bob

That's a beautiful and unusual piece of obsidian, Bobby. Are you gonna cab it?? ;D The patterns in the first pic look like red dendrites.

Very nice! I've never worked red ribbon, so I have to ask: is the difference due to the orientation of the cut?

Chuck, Red ribbon Obsidian has red, often wavy bands that go across the piece. The bands are bright, thin and often have a ribbon-like appearance. It is rather rare material found at Glass Buttes. All of my pieces have come from dealers. Many years ago I collected some Obsidian at Glass buttes but I wasn't aware of the existence of this material at that time. Bob

Some of you have asked if I was going to cab it. The answer is....no. Its not obvious but the "flame-like" pattern side of the piece is curved in two directions - right to left and top to bottom. It would be nearly impossible to cab; however, the back side is flat so could be cabbed. Bob

That's beautiful stuff Bob! Last weekend I got to check out one of Stoner's fire obsidian cabs that's also from Glass buttes I believe. Amazing the different varieties found out there!

Dammmmmn, that is a beauty! I have searched for the red ribbon obsidian every time I go the GB following several old timers directions,,yea older than me to no avail. I do know one person that I believe does know the location, at least he keeps turning up with some, and he is not talking. I do however know several spots where it is not to be found. Woody
