Hello, newbie here and cant figure out how to put a question into the appropriate thread section. I want to ask about the edges of cabs, with turquoise its very thin n u just slope it inwards a little so the bezel on the mount will hold. I am now starting to accumulate hard rock jasper and agate to learn on and in researching I see about sloping the edge inward on some how tos on the net but no mention of a bevel. Other times I see about a bevel but no mention of sloping it in foe the mounting bezel to hold. I am confused. Plus I try to make a uniformly slanted dome on hard rocks and the pics on here show a pretty steep bevel n then a much reduced angle for the dome? ? Also looks like you guys sell boxes of rock pretty regular and it says to "pm" about buying one. I cant figure out how to send a pm to a particular person? Sorry but my computer skill set is somewhere on the low end of the digital world but I will learn just need a lil guidance. Thanks in advance. My name is Bill

Sorry but my computer skill set is somewhere on the low end of the digital world but I will learn just need a lil guidance. Thanks in advance. My name is Bill Hey Bill, Welcome to the forum... Lets break all this down and I can try to help as I can with some of it.. others are sure to chime in also... 1) The edge of a cab..... The thickness of the cab determines whether you can slope & bevel and how much you of each. The thicker the material the easier to work with as most material is usually either 3/16 or 1/4 inch thick... although you will also see some thinner or thicker usually depending on the value of the material or the preferences of the person working with it. Me, I prefer 1/4 inch to work with. When you create the dome of the cab i will naturally slope out towards the side of the cab. while some will leave it that way, others will avoid the thin edge by grinding a bevel into the very edge of the stone..... this provides 2 benefits, 1) it allows a fixed point for wrapping or setting the stone & 2) avoids and thin sharp edge that can cut someone if too thin or will break easily if bumped/dropped. The bevel if not mentioned is probably because the cutter has left the edge flat so there is no bevel there, just a straight edge, this is preferable for wire wrapping the stone. If they bevel the edge of the stone, it is usually in the opposite direction of the top of the stone...IE, the bottom slant inward towards the back of the stone. This is to make it easier to mount the stone to a fixture with and edge as the bevel will be hidden by the backing it is being mounted too and make the stone appear to be flush mounted. If you are going to mount stones to a metal backing, such as a medallion or some other finding, the bevel is the way to go in my opinion. however, if you are going to wrap the stones with wire, the beveled edge will cause problems as the wire will want to slide of the back of the stone, so, at that point the bevel is a flat edge instead of an angled one. 2)To post in a particular section, click on the selection you are interested in, once that screen opens up, click on "new thread" in the upper right side of the section, enter desired info/question, click on post at bottom of box. 3) to send a pm. when a person creates a thread, their name/handle is in the top left side if the screen within the thread and their avatar/picture. /under the avatar is a couple small icons, if you place your mouse over each one it will say send pm, homepage(their website), send Email, different things... you want the one that says "Send PM", click on it and a PM box will open and you enter what you want to say, hit send and you're all set. 4)Buying & Selling... people are a little leery of buying & selling to new members as some have gotten burned... so as a general rule they like to see people get to know and be recognized within the forum,\... usually about 40 - 50 posts. Although if you are interested in buying, not selling at this time... it will be easier to buy from a member than to sell because you are going to be sending money before they ship material out to you. Well hopefully you are not now screaming and pulling out your hair yelling" what ... are they nuts??!!!" and if you have more questions please fell free to ask, I promise not to send you too many long winded answers after this. Once again... welcome to the forum!! Mario

Welcome to the forum. Mario answered every question except his own. "Are we nuts?" Yes indeed.

Thanks Mario that actually cleared up most of my confusion. I dont want to sell but I see others selling BOXES full of pretty nice lookin rocks n wanted to know how to get in on a deal. Having said I dont want to sell I would like to trade...... Before my most recent operation, I am a one legged cowboy n am disabled. Foot operated on, the real one! LOL Anyway due to operation I am not allowed out of the house for 3-6 months while the bones heal, have metal rods sticking out of toes n there is a chance of infection if I go out which includes my newly set up rock shop in the horse barn office. So anyway I go to the Hogg Mine in La Grange Ga, the owner Chris Painter is a great guy, helps me get around n find good stuff! I have buckets of rose quartz that stars that I could trade. Caution to get the star you either have to get the orientation correct or else if you dont wont to worry with finding the star back it with a mirror. So this is a great forum, I been lurkin as a guest n learned what I know mostly here so being confined I decided to join and try to use yall as a teaching aid. Also to learn about different rocks n their cabbing potential. Dont worry about me selling, all those years I raised n sold horses it seemed like I bought at retail n sold at wholesale!!!! Worked hard at my day job to support my horse hobby! LOL Appreciate the help!!!!!
