Those came from one of four veins Snuffy. It was mix of sand/dirty clay.Another vein was turned jet black to various depths by black organic muck yuck.Another vein was turned brown to various depths by heavy iron stained clay.Another was dead white clay with coarse sand/pea gravel. Those corals were all clear yellow, orange, redish orange all the way thru. After heating 70 percent of each of those 3 veins it oughta be nuerotic colorations. They were mostly chipped out of larger corals by ancient man getting his cores out of the center. So they are heavily stained. Thanks for peeking

James I find that to be a beneficial trade out for my wife and I both. She gets quiet time and I get rocks. ;D

Really nice stuff !!! DSC_0223 is my favorite from this batch, the color and pattern is amazing. Polished corals, crinoids and all things fossilized are perhaps my favorites in general. The "natural" look of this batch makes me curious of what your burnishing procedures are?

Thanks for looking at the coral tk.First, these were photographed wet bringing out a polished effect. And a tumble polish should give the same effect. These have a history.First, they were skined off the rind of a large coral to get to the core for artifact manufacture. They were in large quantities, these chips. They laid in the water and soil for many years and stained.Almost all of the coral is clear in this area. The fact they were exposed from the inside instead being protected by the weathered thick skin, they were stained. Then i heated them. The same way ancient man heats flints and cherts to make them more chippable/workable.The minerals/metals that absorbed turn a variety of colors. The only burnishing was one week in a rotary tumbler using 180 grit pink aluminum oxide. So heat and a mild tumble.Or whole corals that are very small www.flickr.com/photos/67205364@N06/sets/72157632545188849/These are cool preground and then fully tumbled like the one in the first 7 photos.
