Well, yesterday, I went down to this fantastic butcher shop we have here locally to get some pork ribs. He does mainly deer and processes like 4000 per year but he also has great beef. lamb and pork, best I've ever had and very inexpensive.
Anyway, I happened to notice they'd done some landscaping with Rio Grande gravel and what is sitting right on top but several great looking Rio grande moss agates including a beautiful red one. Asked if I could have them but the boss wasn't there so the answer was no. Aw shucks!
Well, good excuse to go back for steaks and try to catch the boss in *L*.....Mel

Mel, if it's a LANDSCAPING rock in their business... why would they mind if you took it? No one in their right mind would put their collected specimen in front of a public business if they thought it was special. If you feel bad taking a landscaping rock, next time you go, bring a few the same size and swap out like Gr said:P.

Helen, Texans are very touchy about private property and I would never take anything from a persons landscaping where I might get caught *L*. Easier to find someone to ask for permission. Now I have been eye balling a giant landscaping job in a huge parking lot owned by some faceless corporation *L*. I'm trying to convince myself a quick rock raid when the place is closed for the holidays would be OK but man my upbringing makes that a hard call *L*.....Mel

I'm just glad you follow that moral code, even when hard it is to do.
It's when we start justifying breaking the rules a little bit that we could wind up breaking the rules a lot...and that is when people start ruining the hobby.
Enjoy the steaks and maybe you'll strike up a friendship with the boss and he can tell you who did his yard - and then you can raid that landscaper's pile!

Lowell: The same guy who lets me hunt his rock pile provided the gravel for the two landscaping jobs in question but the quarry the rock came from was much more rich a few years ago than it is now. Some layers seem very rich in agate and the ones they are digging now seem to have much less gem material.....Mel

Mel I bet when you speak to the boss he will gladly let you have the rocks you want and let you replace them with some of yours. Better to ask first than just to take, after all they are his property regardless of their value. You did the right thing in my opinion.

GUYS!!! I'm not suggesting he STEAL rocks, this isn't a rock collector, this is a driveway rock at a butcher shop?!
Just call the butcher and offer to trade for other rocks you have so you're not taking more driveway rocks than you are replacing. I'd imagine all he's worried about is an empty spot full of weeds because he let you take his landscape rocks. Why would a non-rock person care about anything else? If he's a rock person, he wouldn't have left a prize rock in the yard anyway.
