Hello from the foot hills of Mt.Sunflower Kansas.. I have always enjoyed learning about the stuff the planet is made of. Most of all the stones that make up our home planet.. I used to live next to Pikes peak but had to move away to help on the family farm. At first I thought about the same as most people ,that Kansas is flat and full of crops. With not many rocks that are of interest. But after closer inspection I realized there are plenty of rocks worth hounding all over my area. My favorite is the petrified wood that is abundant in the area. So many different colors of opal fossilized that it challenges the mind to think of where it all formed. As far as I can surmise it was deposited by rivers that laid down sand stone sometime around the cretaceous time period. It makes wonderful tumbling material... Anyway I'm glad to stumble on this site of enthusiastic rock hounds.. My hope is that I can have some of my questions and assumptions about the local geology answered by someone with more learning than I. If anyone can tell me if I am right about the age of the wood, how and when it was deposited...that would be a great start.. I think it is possible the wood could be from Permian forest's, 250,000,000 years old give or take.... Attachments:

Thanks for the welcome everyone.. this site is already way more helpful than the stuck up British geology site I tried before this.. those tossers were just rude and had a poorly designed web page..

I have researched it so much I have 3 or 4 theories...and lots of other questions. Like where the heck lava rocks came from out here... all I know for sure is big rivers brought all of the interesting stones here. Thanks again for the welcome ,interesting site this...
