In my previous job I worked for a fragrance manufacturer. The animal derived fragrance materials are generally gross: Ambergris (what this guy found) - whale vomit True musk (not the synthetic stuff) - pellets from a deer abdomen Civet - scrapings from a cat's a$$ Castoreum - beaver a$$ glands Hyraceum - rock hyrax $hit
Like I said, gross.

kinda stupid too. Now that laboratories all have mass spectrometers they can determine the chemical composition of the odors. Then fabricate them in lab. No need for harvesting hyrax feaces. I always wanted a herd of hyrax in my backyard tho'.

A lot of the larger fragrance houses do just that shotgunner. I had the opportunity to smell civettone, one of the active odorants from civet. Has a nice deep, clean musky note without any of the other smells that let you know that the natural stuff comes from a cat butt!

I can't believe that's worth more than double the 12 pound gold nugget found in Australia a couple weeks ago ($300K)!
Oh, wait - I took another look at it, it's only $65K, not $650K. I'd hate to think vomit would be worth more than gold. I'll take the gold any day! No stinky perfume for me, thankyouverymuch! Jean
