Hi, Stu:
The real cost in this game is the recurring cost you pay monthly for voice and data service. My approach would be to look at the companies that you would consider doing business with in your area, see what their coverage maps look like relative to where you would likely use your phone the most and start there with the brands and models they offer.
From what I can decipher, you get to choose between a contractual arrangement with a carrier that you pay for most of the cost of the phone over the course of the contact versus paying for the phone up front and not being stuck with a carrier you may not like. There are also some pay-as-you-go plans for smart phones as well.
One thing that seems to get completely overlooked is how good is this shiny thing in your hand functions as a telephone. This rarely finds its way into reviews or the gadget punditry. You can try asking other folks near at hand how well their gizmo does its phone duties, but people seem to accept an amazingly low quality of voice function if it can be a whiz-bang camera or game controller.
There are a number of sites that attempt to untangle some of the carrier plans; take a look for "cell phone plan comparison" or similar.
The other thing people don't look at carefully is real-world battery life. If you pick up your phone when you get out of bed in the morning and use it constantly throughout the day even just for phone calls (things like using it for Internet browsing, watching video, playing games slurp up battery life rapaciously), you may not make it to dinner time without recharging. Bigger screens and faster connection = shorter run time, as a gross generality.
These conversations often descend into quasi-religious fanatical discussions, and not wanting to bring on a LTU&E moment, I will offer that what's good for one individual will be a bad fit for another, and sometimes for a reason that's not apparent at the outset. My personal opinion for my personal choice when I finally retire the candy-bar phone I got back in the Spanish-American War will be for the most recent iteration of the iPhone. I'll be glad to discuss my reasons this is my choice for me in a PM if you are interested.
Thanks, Jack

I got iPhone 4S in September. I like it. The phone function is very good and clear. Also use the camera a lot, and look up x on the web periodically.
It is also possible to take photos on the iPhone and post them on our forum directly. I think you need the Proboards app to do that I'm working on it.
I don't use it for music, videos or games.
I plug it in every night and sync it with my Mac.
I like it.

I am partial to the Android platform, however the IPhone would probably be a better choice for you...since you are a smartphone novice.

I love Galaxy Droids. The RTH Proboards App is killer. Love being able to just click on the little microphone and speak everything instead of having to type on a teeny tiny keyboard. Iphone does the same thing. Our family plan is unlimited talk (between family or same carrier contacts), text, video and data so I never have to worry about overages.

Somebody said it won't make you smarter. No as a matter of fact, you might feel really dumb for a while. But there is light at the end of the tunnel. Then it will be just another phone! Live and learn, hahahaha. Good Luck with your choice. Hey, let sebastian choose. Dogs are really smart.

I got my wife the IPhone5 for xmas. Something like $110 monthly, insane. I will be keeping the dumbphone. It was expensive but on the other hand a small price to pay if you know what I mean lol. I admit it's pretty cool and after seeing what you can do with one---things like controlling robots and drones I admit I'd like to get one.
