Had a knapper send me some heated/baked jasper n agate. It is so smooth almost looks polished already on some of it, like glass. He doesna know cabbing. He heats it to get a more brittle easier to knap stone. This is very good looking georgeous stuff, alot is preformed for arrowheads, spears etc. Can I cab it or is it too fragile? Sorry no pics I am 100 miles from the rocks visiting parents. Most of it has a perfect sawn 45 degree edge going in curves! Like to know how he does that!

You should have no problem cabbing it. I'd hate to say he heats it to make it brittle...rather say he heats it to organize the crystal structure to flake easier. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) You're going to have to ask him about the 45 degree edge cut in curves - then tell us.

I've worked heated material as a knapper and cabber. The only real difference you'll notice it that the heated material will cut faster. This is because the heat treatment makes the stone break easier/wear faster. So, treat it like a "softer" material than you would if it were raw.
