Nice shots, James!! The purple lilies are beautiful (honeybees, too, lol, and a wasp?) Those "waterlily" bugs will sting the mess out of ya!!

Excellent photographs! I love the details of their wings. My favorite picture is the last one, looks that one of them is taking a nap inside the flower. ;D

Love all the photos. Wish I could manage even half as good a shot. Fantastic focus and framing is beyond reproach.

Thanks you guys.I work in waders and have harvested many thousands of water lilies over the years and never had a bee sting me.I think they are drunk on the strong nectar jellomen. gr,that camera is an older Nikon D70 bought used and cheap. You can access the internal memory and find out how many shots it has taken. She recently bought a newer D90 used and it had taken 36 photos-like new. The very important part is the lense. It is one of her retired ones.It has a switch for macro, but not 1:1 macro. But it is freindlier than 1:1 or 1:2 macro. It's a zoom.Nikon 24-85 mm 1:2.8-4 D.I take all rock close ups w/out tripod and all scenory with that rig.It does it all. Those lilies were stock photos for sale brochures taken about 2 feet away.I just went thru them and found the pics w/bugs and cropped them for this post except the bees were intentional.I shoot in manual till the histogram graph looks like a camel hump in the center. No brain

Thanks Pat.Trying to find that hornet/wasp.Seems closest to a ground hornet. It is large-1 and 1/2 inches.Non aggressive. They typically lay eggs in/on another insects body and bury it so the hatchlings will have something to eat at birth. Can't seem to get the markings right.

Very nice macro work with the camera. I love shooting macro of both insects and flowers. I shoot the desert cacti in AZ, and the wild flowers in Montana. Keep up the great work!

James, do you have any miniature tropical water lilies or lotus? I have this big 55 gallon plastic drum that I want to cut in 1/2 and sink in my yard for 2 little waterlilies and some goldfish maybe.
Years ago, I had a koi pond, and I had waterlilies and a BIG lotus. I cannot talk about what happened to my fish, it still makes me sad... but miniatures would be neat... I know there's at least 1 variety of dark purple miniature waterlily, because I had one of those, so there's probably more of them. Whatcha got:)?

Those are really cool looking plants jamesp. Helen I like your ideal with the container. I might just have to try that out at my brothers house. His wife is a green thumber and in the last 5 years or so I planted around a 1,000 plants, bushes, small ornamental trees, all kinds of cool looking stuff in their yard for her. She maintains, trims and cuts all the stuff though. Its pretty cool looking. Did a fancy brick border around it all this year to top it all off. Took me pretty much all spring, summer and fall when I wasnt working out of the labor hall I worked on their yard. Shes an architect and designed the layout and has picked all the plants out thoughout the years, adding more and replacing dead stuff. I keep telling my brother Im going to send some pics to The Botanical Gardens in St Louis. Its one of the coolest residental yards Ive seen. Shes spend a bunch of money on it, thats for shure. Around May or so everythings in bloom and for a few weeks the flowers almost look fake. I work as a laborer and enjoy doing this type of thing even if its not my own yard.
