Hi Everyone,
I am sick of the snow and cold and am going to visit my niece in Laguna Beach for a few days. She lives a stones throw from the hills and I was wondering if there is any good spots to look for rocks that you may share. Also any good rock shops in the Laguna area?
Thanks very much
Tom from frozen Saskatchewan!

there are some Orange County member here that may know better, but I have to say I have never heard of a rock shop in or near Laguna Beach. When you arrive you will see the area is quite affluent and rock shopps need cheap rent. Perhaps I am wrong. 40 minutes up the coast is the Palos Verdes glaucophane and barite crystal sites.

Don't know of much rockhounding in the area. There used to be lots of fossils in OC but I think they're covered in condos now. You could head down to the Oceanview Mine or Pala mine though, if you want to hunt for tourmaline and quartz crystals in a pay to dig setting. Very fun. Those are maybe 1.5 hours away from Laguna.

Haven't been there in years, but there are a lot of art shops, and many of them have rock sculptures and/or jewelry. Fun place.

Thanks kindly everyone:) I checked out the Oceanview/Pala mines on the net and they look interesting, for sure going to hit that site at Palos Verdes. There was a bit of info on it from rock clubs as recent as 2012. It will just be nice to get away from snow and get a morning walk in the hills.
As for the Laguna shops we will check them out but I know they are above my pay grade! Very cool little place though, I have had some great diving there too.
Thanks again
Tom

Tom, there's a place called Nevada Book and Mineral in Orange (http://www.minbooks.net/) that would be worth the drive up from Laguna. I frequent it almost every other month (seriously). The owner, Walt Lombardo is very knowledgeable and has an excellent stock.
Thanks Paul

Tom, I'm in Laguna almost daily. The last decent shop closed a few months back (it was in Laguna Canyon). That shop catered to very high-end decorators whose clients wanted geo-decore ( I just invented a new word!).
